Meet Our Founder
“Mama” Maureen Casey
Maureen has performed missionary services across Central America, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa. Ms. Casey studied graphic art at Concord University and worked as a graphic artist on magazines and in studios in Dallas, Texas and San Diego, California. She also studied French and culture at Sorbonne University in Paris, France and earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Theology from Christ for the Nations in Dallas, Texas.
She began serving this community, Chimaltenango, Guatemala, in 1991 when Dr. Virgilio Zapata brought her from Los Angeles to serve as a high school teacher in his ‘Instituto Evangelico ‘America Latina’ for three years. There she started Bethel Ministries as an evangelism outreach project performing children’s crusades around the country.
IEAL’s heart for the disabled transformed bethel into a wheelchair ministry in 1993 with the assistance of Mark Richard and Joni and Friends Ministries. She founded the wheelchair refurbishing shop where disabled men work to restore used wheelchairs and distribute them to the poor across Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. She brought Chris and Donna Mooney down to Guatemala in 1998 who have lead Bethel to bigger and better service to the disabled of Guatemala. It is prospering today and one of Maureen’s boys, Daniel Ortiz, works there as a shop assistant.
In 2001 Ms. Casey organized the first board of Los Gozosos. April 2003 they opened the orphanage with one child, Helen, and the school with eight students in Chimaltenango where she currently devotes her time. She now has 27 children in the orphanage, 13 children in Heaven with Jesus, and 29 students in the school, eight children from the community who come to classes each day.
Maureen has devoted her whole heart and soul to loving her children, they are her very own, and raising them to love and serve our Lord Jesus Christ. She is devoted to her staff and seeing Christ formed in them. She hopes to open a second orphanage and Special Ed school in San Lucas, Sacatepequez February 2020.
